PROGRAM/DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:
Mercy Corps Resource Development Department is responsible for raising
funds from the private sector, which includes individuals, businesses,
foundations and community organizations. Development Associates work with
the Senior Development Officer, in coordination with the Marketing and
Constituency Development Teams, to provide personalized acknowledgement and
service to our mid-level major donors. Contributions from individual
donors represent a highly strategic and growing source of support for Mercy
Corps global relief and development programs.
GENERAL POSITION SUMMARY:
The Development Associate (Boston) is part of a team of four
regionally-based development associates and will be responsible for
providing personalized attention and thoughtful service to a group of
700-900 mid-level major donors, so that this passionate and committed group
of individuals is appropriately recognized for their contribution to Mercy
Corps important work and understands the impact of their gifts to people
in
need all over the world.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Communicate with donors, primarily by phone, to thank them for their
contributions, discuss their interest in Mercy Corps work, and solicit and
document their feedback
Research and respond to questions and information requests from donors in a
professional and timely manner
Write and distribute special correspondence including issue updates,
solicitation letters and special acknowledgements, using templates developed
by Mercy Corps staff with appropriate personalization
Organize one to two local receptions per year and recruit donors to attend
Recruit donors to attend two conference calls per year
Enter all actions and contacts with donors in Raisers Edge in an accurate
and timely manner
Discern which individuals may have the desire and capacity to contribute at
a higher level and collaborate with the Constituency Development Team to
ensure that potential partnerships are pursued
Occasionally, at strategic times, ask Mercy Corps donors to make a financial
contribution
Assist in evaluating and improving the overall mid-level major donor
cultivation program
Stay abreast of Mercy Corps programmatic work and communicate the impact
of
this work to donors
Other duties as assigned
Organizational Learning
As part of Mercy Corps agency-wide Organizational Learning Initiative, all
team members are responsible for spending 5% of their work time in formal
and/or non-formal professional learning activities.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
REPORTS DIRECTLY TO: Senior Development Officer
WORKS DIRECTLY WITH: Marketing Director, Constituency Development Officers
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
College degree preferred
At least two years experience in the field of communication, marketing,
fundraising, or advocacy, with significant work experience communicating
with people by phone
Outstanding people skills and customer service skills
Excellent verbal communication skills, particularly by phone, and strong
written communication skills
Highly organized and strong attention to detail
Ability to work well independently, with minimal supervision, and to balance
multiple priorities
Willing to maintain open line of communication with supervisor
Professional demeanor
Experience with MS Office and database software
Interest in international aid and development
SUCCESS FACTORS:
The successful Development Associate will be exceptional at striking a
rapport with a variety of individuals by phone. The ability to communicate
with passion, sincerity, and brevity, listen and respond to donors needs,
and provide excellent customer service is essential. The successful
Development Associate will be able to discern those with an interest and
ability to increase their commitment to Mercy Corps, and help them to deepen
their involvement with the organization. Finally, this person will be
dedicated to the Mercy Corps mission of helping to build more secure,
productive, and just communities, and will share that passion with
supporters.
LIVING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Must be able to work flexible hours, including some evenings
Occasional travel within the U.S. may be required
Position may be performed from the Mercy Corps office or a home office,
depending on the needs and wishes of the supervisor, candidate, and local
office
