Organization
The mission of the Elizabeth Peabody House (EPH) is to provide educational,
social and recreational services to address the essential and changing needs
of families in the City of Somerville and surrounding communities. Current
programs include:
 Infant/Toddler daycare and Preschool daycare for pre-school aged children,
 Afterschool programming for school-aged children from elementary to high
school ages
 Community Theatre for adults and teens,
 Adult education in topics such as effective parenting, financial literacy
and English as a Second Language
 A summer day camp on twenty acres of lake frontage outside of Boston
 
EPH was founded in 1896 in Boston as a memorial to Elizabeth Palmer Peabody,
whose dedication to the care of children led to the founding of the first
kindergarten system in America. Originally established in the West End of
Boston and later relocated to Somerville, EPH continues to provide
educational, social and recreational programs for immigrants and community
residents.

Position
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Finance and Operations
will oversee the infrastructure, systems and processes needed to increase
the size and impact of the agency over the coming years. S/he will be
responsible for the oversight of five key functions of the organization:
finance, administration, human resources, facilities and information
technology. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of
Finance and Operations will play an important role in the internal and
external leadership of the agency and will be expected to contribute to the
strategic planning of the agency and the professional development of staff.
 
The Director of Finance and Operations will act as a liaison to the Board of
Directors' Finance Committee, working closely with the Committee to
strengthen EPH's financial position. S/he will continually evaluate best
industry practices in comparison to internal systems and needed resources,
with an eye toward both future needs and budget realities.
 
Responsibilities
Fiscal Management
 Supervise accounting, budgeting, internal controls, maintenance of
investment records, insurance policies (D&O, Property & Casualty, Workers'
Compensation, etc.) and the audit process
 Oversee monthly invoices and tracking of accounts receivable to ensure
timely collection of private and public revenues
 Develop monthly, quarterly and annual financial reporting materials and
metrics for the Executive Director and Board of Directors
 Lead the annual budget process and support management-level staff as they
work to hit budget targets
 
Human Resources, Facilities and IT Management
 Supervise human resources practices and ensure they are conducted in a
professional manner
o Work with the Office Manager and the Executive Director to make the agency
an increasingly desirable place to work with a high degree of employee
satisfaction
o Work to continuously improve HR systems and processes so that they are
consistent with the highest professional standards
 Manage the maintenance and upkeep of the facilities and physical
infrastructure of the agency
 Oversee the organizations physical infrastructure, which currently
consists of multiple buildings and assets at three locations
 Supervise longer-term planning that ensures the agencys programs are
supported by the necessary resources and spaces
 Manage more complex projects, such as building renovations, as necessary
to ensure they finish on time, under budget, and with the desired result
 Ensure that the administrative functions provide excellent customer
service to people both inside and outside the agency
 Oversee support for the agencys information technology so that it
effectively supports programs and the administration
 
Individual and Team Leadership
 Supervise administrative and facilities staff, currently including the
Office Manager and three Facilities staff
 Provide coaching and mentoring to direct reports and other administrative
staff so that they become more effective at their current positions and can
have a greater impact on behalf of the agency
 Represent EPH to relevant external stakeholders
o Maintain positive relationships with the vendors, funders, city and state
regulators and others, as needed
o Support marketing and public relations efforts for programs
 
Qualifications
The Director of Finance and Operations will have at least five years of
professional experience, with at least three years managing the finance and
administration of an organization or business unit. The successful
candidate will have experience working in a professional environment, and
will bring high standards and a strong work ethic to each aspect of this
position.
 
 
Specific qualifications include
 
 Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting
 Experience with audit, legal compliance, and budget development
 Experience with the HR systems, practices and procedures and professional
organizations
 Experience effectively communicating key data, including presentations to
senior management, the Board or other outside partners/influencers/clients
 Technologically savvy, with experience overseeing information technology
staff or vendors
 Bachelor's degree required; MBA, CPA or other relevant advanced degree
preferred
