Job Description:
From May to August, you will run a citizen outreach office with one to six
colleagues. You will be responsible for building a locally based political
organization from the ground up by hiring and training a staff of paid
canvassers who will gather data, build membership, recruit volunteers, and
raise funds for Progressive Future.
You will be responsible for recruiting, training, managing, and motivating a
staff of 10-60 paid canvassers. You will run ongoing trainings with your
staff, and take responsibility for administering the office.
You will canvass two to three times each week to train staff in the field,
identify potential volunteers and raise money.
After August, organizers will have the opportunity to work with 15-20
volunteers recruited from the summer campaign to run a neighborhood-based
Get-Out-The-Vote campaign for the fall election.
Qualifications:
We are looking for smart, motivated, action-oriented college graduates and
interested others with a passion for politics and a strong commitment to
progressive causes. Candidates should be ready to take on lots of
responsibility, learn quickly, hit ambitious goals and be willing to work as
long and hard as it takes to get the job done. Training will be extensive
and will include classroom training and ongoing field trainings.
Locations:
Progressive Future is hiring motivated candidates for the following
locations: NH, PA, VA, FL, OH, MI, IA, CO, NV, NM and WI.
Salary/Benefits:
First year staff earn an annual salary of $23,750. Benefits include
eligibility to enroll in our group health plan and college loan assistance.
Salary and benefits increase with experience.
Typical Day:
9:30 You and the offices other director sit down for your daily meeting.
Evaluate staff performance. Review priorities and goals for the day.
11:00 Interview potential canvassing staff.
12:45 Meet with your lead staff. Get their ideas on how to improve staff
training program.
1:45 Canvassing staff arrive at the office.
2:00 Give brief updates to the staff about relevant political happenings,
goals, and upcoming social events. Congratulate exemplary staff and welcome
newcomers.
2:10 Run a role-play session on how to recruit citizens to get involved with
the organization.
2:50 Drive to targeted local community with a group of canvassers, including
a new staffperson. Over a meal break get to know your staff and talk to them
about the local congressional representative.
4:00 Having arrived at your assigned site for the day, train the new
staffperson. Talk to a few people yourself demonstrating how to talk about
the organization and ways to get involved. Let the trainee canvass a few
people. Give specific, manageable feedback to improve confi,dence and
skills.
9:00 Pick up the rest of your crew and return to office.
9:15 Oversee quick round of paperwork.
Talk with staff to get information on what happened that day.
10:00 Grab dinner with staff.
10:45 Finish up final paperwork and call your staff director to hear
highlights on nationwide performances on our way to record-breaking voter
turn-out in 08.
Training:
Staff will participate in on-the-job training and central trainings
throughout the course of their time on staff. Expect to learn how to manage
a team, train staff, handle administration, and fundraise.
