SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
 
 
Greenpeace takes non-violent direct action in the public arena as an
integral part of its Campaigns. Greenpeace USA is seeking someone with
experience in campaigning, field logistics, direct action coordination, and
project management to join our Actions Team. This is an exciting
opportunity to contribute to the success of our Campaigns.
 
The Actions Campaigner is responsible for furthering Greenpeace USA's
Campaign objectives through ongoing strategic planning with Greenpeace
Campaigners, and to coordinate and execute innovative, creative,
confrontational and inspirational non-violent direct actions, direct
communications, protests and other campaign and logistical activities. They
are responsible for working directly with the Campaigns Department in
evaluating appropriate tactics and timing for these events based on the
Campaign strategies and objectives.
 
The successful candidate should have experience in leading a variety of
field events, large and small. They should have excellent communication and
organization, and planning skills. They should work well under pressure,
have an understanding of health and safety issues relating to Direct
Actions, a commitment to the ideals of Greenpeace and an understanding of
environmental and peace issues. They should be an excellent strategic
thinker, skilled in conflict resolution, demonstrate a high degree of
initiative and creativity, have a commitment to non-violent direct action as
means of affecting change and be willing to travel extensively both within
the US and internationally.
 
Other responsibilities include training activists and ensuring the health
and safety of all individuals under their care in the field.
 
The Actions Campaigner is a member of the GPUSA Action Team and reports to
the Action Team Director. As a member of the Actions Team, the Action
Campaigner is required to work in a close team dynamic, and as such will be
responsible (as will other team members) for the productivity of the team as
a whole. The Actions Team at Greenpeace US is also responsible for the
management of our action warehouses and equipment, as well as the training,
recruitment and coordination of our direct action activists.
 
This is a full-time, permanent position and based in either San Francisco or
Washington DC. To be based in San Francisco, the applicant must be willing
to spend substantial time in Washington DC upon securing the position.
 
 
RESPONSIBLITIES:
 
1. ACTIONS/CAMPAIGNS LIASON DUTIES
 
A. Serve as liaison between the Action Team and Campaign Department for
ongoing development and coordination of non-violent direct actions and field
events that support campaign strategies and objectives. Ensure that targets
are appropriately selected, tactics are relevant, and research is thorough
relevant to field events
 
B. Lead the design and implementation of direct action tactics that
contribute to changing public, government and/or corporate behavior in line
with the Campaigns objectives.
 
C. Lead the creation and development of new and innovative forms of direct
action, direct communication, protest, photo-ops and intervention across
departments within GPUS. Solicit the input of creative and innovative
thinkers on projects from inside and outside of the organization.
 
D. Keep the Action Team briefed as new action ideas and projects develop
within the campaign and facilitate involvement of team members in
brainstorms and generation of ideas.
 
E. Undertake both office and field research and investigations for campaign
projects
 
 
2. DIRECT ACTION COORDINATION
 
A. Responsible for the logistical planning, preparation, coordination and
execution of direct actions, direct communications, environmental protests,
investigations, tours, ships-based actions in the US, and other
interventions.
 
B. Ensure that all personnel in direct actions strictly apply health and
safety procedures.
 
C. Ensure that all Actions Team-planning processes are adhered to.
Responsible for administrative duties pertaining to the Actions Team
procedures in the preparation, execution and follow-up of action, including
updating action personnel data, loss/damage insurance claims, etc.
 
D. Responsible for all financial aspects of action projects, including
budget proposals, cost control, dealing with invoices and producing
after-project budget reports.
 
E. Ensure that technical and logistical debriefs are conducted after every
action, and any relevant information is fed into the evaluation report.
 
F. Ensure that actions are comprehensively reviewed and/or evaluated as per
internal evaluation process.
 
G. Responsible for ensuring the Activist Program Manager is informed of all
personnel-related issues upon completion of an event, including legal issues
and administrative issues.
 
H. Responsible for ensuring the Equipment and Warehouse Manager is informed
of all action equipment-related issues upon completion of an event,
including the return/replacement of seized equipment and updating
equipment-logbooks.
 
I. Responsible for working closely with the Equipment and Warehouse Manager
on all equipment-related matters in connection with the planning,
preparation, coordination and execution of direct actions, direct
communications, environmental protests, investigations, tours, ship-based
actions in the US, and other interventions.
 
J. Supervise and coordinate contractors and volunteers working on projects
as required
 
 
3. TRAINING
 
A. Provide input into the development and implementation of the activist!&
training program to the Activist Program Manager, and as needed act as a
trainer, especially in one!&s field of expertise.
 
B. When coordinating an action, work in conjunction with the Activist
Program Manager to plan and execute training and rehearsal projects related
to the preparation for that action.
 
 
OTHER
 
A. Maintain and develop excellent relations with the direct actions staff
throughout all Greenpeace offices including International Marine & Actions
Division.
 
B. On occasion represent Greenpeace to the media, authorities, allies or
opponents.
 
C. Perform any other job-related duties as assigned by the Actions Team
Director
 
 
SELECTION CRITERIA
 
Essential Qualities and Skills:
 


h Proven team leadership, management abilities and personnel assessment
skills

h Experience in coordinating and/or team leading in Direct Actions and/or
experience in
managing large teams of people in other complex and stressful situations.

h Excellent communications skills - both written and oral

h Excellent organizing and planning skills

Desirable Qualities and Skills:
 

h Experience as a Greenpeace trainer in one or more of; boat driving,
climbing, NVDA and HAZMAT

h Experience working with Greenpeace ships or other vessels

h Experience working as a Campaigner for either GP or other non-profit
