OVERVIEW
The Capital Punishment Project of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU)
invites applications for a Senior Staff Attorney or Staff Attorney to work
in the Project's Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, office. Through a
nationwide program of strategic litigation, systemic reform and public
education and advocacy, the Project focuses on the unfairness and
unpredictability of capital punishment while working toward its ultimate
goal of abolishing the death penalty.
 
 
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES
Under the supervision of the Project's Director, the Staff Attorney will be
responsible for coordinating and litigating cases. The roles and
responsibilities of this position are flexible dependent upon the skill set
and experience of the selected candidate. This is an excellent opportunity
for a senior attorney to bring knowledge, expertise and refinement to the
Program or for an attorney with 2 plus years of experience to learn and grow
with us.
 Assist in the identification of appropriate cases, draft pleadings and
briefs, and appear in court.
 Monitor case investigation and mitigation.
 Work with expert witnesses, including mental-health experts, and prepare
and present cases in court, including at the trial level.
 Support and promote the work of the ACLU's local affiliates on capital
punishment issues, engage in public advocacy, including in the media, at
conferences and other public settings.
 Participate in relevant task forces and coalitions.
 Other duties and projects as assigned.
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Applicants must be members in good standing of a state bar and have the
following:
 JD, admission to North Carolina bar or willingness to obtain admission.
 More than five years greatly preferred (including some capital experience
and/or trial experience), two or more years of legal experience required.
 An understanding of capital mitigation and mental-health issues or
willingness and ability to obtain such an understanding.
 Ability to communicate clearly and persuasively both orally and in
writing; excellent analytic, legal research and writing skills.
 Ability to solve complex legal issues.
 Willingness to travel throughout the country.
 Ability to work collegially within the ACLU and other organizations.
 Commitment to the mission and goals of the Project and the ACLU.
