Job Description:
Looking to broaden your international perspectives while working with
idealist, enthusiastic teens?
 
Then join our staff team at the Global Youth Village. Every summer since
1979, a dynamic environment is created that emphasizes experiential learning
and challenges young people to turn cross-cultural theory into practical
action. This year 60 youths (ages 13-18) and 25 staff from around the world
will participate. 2008 Highlights include youth delegations from Indonesia
and Iraq. Workshops address issues concerning young people today, such as
war and peace, distribution of world resources, prejudice, and the effects
of media and other social pressures. Cultural programming and cooperative
living help participants learn to respect differences and discover
similarities that transcend cultural, religious, political, and language
barriers.
 
ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS
Each year, professionals with varied talents work with the year-round staff
to implement different program elements. These various roles all demand
special qualities and talents that are crucial to the Global Youth Village's
successful operation
 
* Program Coordinator: Oversees strategic areas of program delivery related
to leadership development, all-village discussions, cultural appreciation,
community building and promoting a sense of vision for the future. Main
responsibilities include: 1) assisting in delivery of staff training; 2)
facilitating meetings and ensuring the upholding of standards in the Program
Team, while identifying ways to improve group dynamics and challenge youths;
3) plan and deliver youth orientations, mid-session reflections, all-village
discussions, and end-of-session closing activities. Requires a minimum of
two year's experience in program design, delivery, youth leadership
development and staff management.
Trainer of trainers experience
preferred. Must be enthusiastic, self-motivated, have high personal
stamina, be self-reflective, and have an ability to inspire groups &
individuals.
 
* Special Programs Coordinator: Oversees program planning and delivery
related to cultural appreciation, community building and promoting a sense
of vision for the future. Main responsibilities include meeting with key
administrative staff to monitor youth dynamic and experience, and
coordinating the delivery of all aspects of camp-wide programs. These
include: 1) cultural festivals involving slide shows, dance, ethnic meals,
songs, carnivals, 2) global issues presentations & discussions, 3)
recreational events such as dances, games, and fairs, and 4) talent nights.
Work with the director, staff, youth, and special guests to develop
well-facilitated programs, cultural presentations, stage set-up and
decorations, etc. Applicants should have program design experience,
supervisory and event planning skills, and an ability to manage, delegate,
inspire, and draw upon the talents of different people. Skills in leading
large group games and performance experience are also helpful.
 
(Other opening for teachers(international relations/political science, media
studies, conflict resolution/prejudice reduction, environmental education,
Arabic language & culture), cabin counselors/program specialists with skills
in arts & crafts, pool life guarding, rock climbing, computer lab
management, sports and recreation, health care staff, plus experienced and
entry level food service staff.)
 
Dates: June 24 - July 29 OR August 12, 2008. All positions are residential
and include housing and meals, plus a modest salary ranging between
$900-$1900 depending on role, experience and length of employment.
