Job Description:
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national nonprofit public
organization, seeks applicants who are interested in a full-time position as
a Legislative Assistant in the ACLUs Washington National Office. The
Legislative Assistant will work directly with ACLU Lobbyists on pending
legislation and administrative proposals.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
Provide both research and administrative assistance to two Lobbyists
Track legislation by attending Congressional committee hearings
Track mark-ups by using specialized congressional databases and the Internet
Draft legislative fact sheets
Prepare lobbying packets for use in congressional visits
Research information for special projects and draft memoranda
Proofread and prepare final copy of documents
Represent ACLU at coalition meetings
Draft letters to Congress and others
Monitor pending legislation and Federal Register Notices to identify
emerging civil liberties issues
Respond to requests for information
Handle routine administrative tasks/duties and mailing letters.
Make meeting and travel arrangements and screen and route telephone calls
Handle logistics for special functions including arrangements for space,
caterers, setup, cleanup, etc.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Lobbyist and the Associate
Director/Chief Legislative Counsel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelors degree or a minimum of 2 years experience required.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Must be proficient with MS Office 2000 or IBM compatible
computer software
skills.
Some knowledge of the legislative process and interest in civil liberties is
helpful.
