Organization
Communities In Schools (CIS) is the nation's largest dropout prevention
organization. The mission of Communities In Schools is to champion the
connection of needed community resources with schools to help young people
successfully learn, stay in school and prepare for life. Founded more than
30 years ago, today there are 200 local CIS affiliates serving 2,500 schools
sites and 2 million students in 27 states and the District of Columbia.
Communities In Schools of Washington state (CISWA) is one of CIS 14 state
offices. The CISWA state office supports ongoing development of local
affiliates and works with communities as they implement the CIS strategy.
Currently in Washington state there are 12 CIS affiliates (independent
501(c)(3) organizations that address students' needs at the community level)
which serve close to 25,000 students and their families. The state office
also serves as the connection between CIS affiliates, and the national
office in Alexandria, Virginia.

Position
Reporting to the Board of Directors of CISWA, the Executive Director is
responsible for developing and implementing statewide strategies that
enhance the organizations momentum and deepen its impact. Directly
managing
a team of 7, the Executive Director will lead the charge in developing deep
partnerships with CIS affiliates and with external stakeholders throughout
the State of Washington. As well, s/he will ensure that CISWA receives
individual, state and federal funding, and that the state network actively
participates in Communities In Schools national network initiatives.
Specific responsibilities
include:
Strategic Leadership
In collaboration with the Board of Directors, set and lead the
organizations strategic plan and vision for expansion
Develop, present and implement operational plans for current,
and
replication, activities; lead all fiscal and
budgeting activities as well as evaluate performance against stated plans
with timely and transparent information for the Board of Directors
Effectively support the CIS network statewide to adopt CIS
nationals accreditation standards
Identify and support communities across Washington state
looking to
explore or develop CIS affiliates
Support all Board of Director engagement and align committee
structures to desired outcomes
Recruit, mentor, manage and evaluate the state office program
staff
Partnerships, Fundraising, and Government Relations
Develop a comprehensive fundraising strategy and lead its
implementation; establish strong relationships with individual, corporate
and foundation donors, partner closely with Board members, and
research/develop new state and federal funding sources to underwrite
current, and future, CISWA activities and affiliates
Build effective, mutually-beneficial relationships with the
CISWA
local affiliates so as to continuously share best practices, and expand the
statewide impact
Raise CISWAs profile by establishing and maintaining
close
relationships with, and thoughtful outreach to, state legislators and their
staffs, appropriate nonprofit agencies, commissions, and media outlets to
address issues affecting youth and families
Actively participate in the network of CIS state
directors who
propose policies, procedures, and future directions of the CIS national
network
Qualifications
Masters Degree preferred; Minimum of a Bachelors
Degree, with at
least 10 years overall professional experience, including a minimum of 5
years in public administration, education, social services or a related
field. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated management and fiscal
responsibility for a complex public service organization that focuses on
youth and their families
Demonstrated commitment to improving the life opportunities
for
young people; sensitivity to the needs of diverse racial and ethnic
populations; ideally with knowledge of school district policies
Strong and agile relationship-builder with an ability to
proactively adapt when establishing partnerships; must have a track record
of securing significant resources from foundations, corporations,
individuals, events and public entities
Proven track record as an inspirational, high energy team
leader
who can galvanize diverse groups toward common goals
Organized, with attention to detail and experience in leading
strategic and operational planning and budgeting
Superior level of interpersonal, written and oral
communications
skills
Willingness to maintain a state office in Seattle, Washington,
as
well as the ability to travel throughout the state (to the state capital,
Olympia, and to other locations that already have an affiliate office or are
exploring/developing one) and nationally (for CIS national meetings) on a
regular basis
