Job Description:
POSITION TITLE: AmeriCorps*National Preparedness Response Corps (NPRC)
Member
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Working with paid and volunteer staff, the NPRC Corps Members provide direct
service to clients of the American Red Cross through the accomplishment of
National Preparedness Response Corps goals and objectives.
 
MAJOR DUTIES:
As part of a team, each Member completes NPRC goals and objectives,
including;
 Teaching community disaster education and health/safety classes to members
of traditionally under-served communities;
 Responding to local and national disaster relief assignments;
 Initiating and coordinating special events and projects;
 Recruiting and coordinating volunteers;
 Preparing written reports and other documentation.
 
PROGRAM SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Corps Members will be selected to fill the following position descriptions:
 Community Disaster Education  The NPRC CDE team member is primarily
responsible for providing Community Disaster Education (CDE) information to
traditionally underserved populations. Additionally, they work on a variety
of projects to support the goals of the NPRC program and the goals and
operations of the Emergency Services Department.
 Workplace Preparedness  The NPRC Workplace Preparedness team member
serves within the Community Outreach Department, and is primarily
responsible for providing Workplace Preparedness Programs (WPP) to local
businesses and non-profit organizations to promote preparedness of employees
and develop continuity of operations plans. Additionally, they work on a
variety of projects to support the goals of the NPRC program and the goals
and operations of the Community Outreach Department.
 Youth Services  The two NPRC Youth Services team members are primarily
responsible for teaching youth and young adults in the King County, Seattle,
Washington area, life saving Red Cross curriculum; recruiting and training
Red Cross teen volunteers through outreach in the community and to
underserved populations; assisting in the development of a youth curriculum
focusing on Community Disaster education, how to prepare and respond to
natural emergencies. The two team members will also mentor teen volunteers,
empowering them to train younger youth.
 
REQUIREMENTS:
Education: High school diploma or GED, 1-2 years university or equivalent
life experience.
 
Experience:
 Previous experience and success working with diverse populations;
 Previous experience working with youth preferred for some positions;
 At least one year of prior volunteer experience.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
 Excellent organizational skills;
 Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;
 Public speaking and group facilitation skills;
 Ability to motivate and act as a positive role model;
 Ability to mobilize for possible disaster relief assignments lasting a
maximum of 3 weeks with little advance notice;
 Ability to work well independently and as a member of a team;
 Demonstrates professionalism and initiative.
 
OTHER:
 A current valid driver's license and a clean driving record;
 At least 18 years of age at the start of the program;
 A U.S. Citizen, U.S. National, or lawful permanent resident alien of the
U.S.;
 A clean Washington State Patrol background check;
 Willing to make a full-time commitment to complete a term for service
between August 4, 2008 and June 19, 2009 and complete 1700 service hours.
