The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national public interest
organization, seeks applicants for an Advocacy Coordinator to work with its
Technology and Liberty Project in Washington, DC.
 
The Technology and Liberty Project is dedicated to protecting equality and
privacy rights in the digital age and coordinates with the ACLUs extensive
litigation and legislative programs. The ACLU Technology and Liberty Project
serves as a resource for the ACLUs work on the intersection of technology,
science and civil liberties. The Project seeks to advance ACLU policy goals
through public education, organizing and participating in coalitions. Over
the past few years, the ACLU has become the premier advocate for online free
expression and a bulwark against the threat that new technologies pose to
personal privacy. The Advocacy Coordinator will report to the Project
Director and is based in the Washington Office of the ACLU.
 
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Work with the ACLUs 53 local affiliates and ACLU national staff to
execute public outreach components of TLPs campaigns and program.
 Work in close coordination with the Washington Office Legislative Field
and Communications staff, as well as with components of the National Legal
Department including National Security Program and the Immigrants Rights
Project.
 Organize strategies aimed at solidifying support for preserving privacy
rights in the face of technological developments including campaigns to
control the spread of video surveillance; to protect genetic privacy; to
preserve liberty in the face of NSAs use of technology to spy on
communications and private activities of Americans and to oppose the
adoption of the National ID system.
 Write, edit, and plan the distribution of advocacy materials, including,
blogs, video scripts, and calls to action.
 Coordinate advocacy and cultivate and maintain relationships with other
advocacy and community organizations working on technology and liberty
issues.
 Assist ACLU program staff and the ACLUs web team in updating and
maintaining web pages about the Projects cases and issues.
 
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
 Bachelors degree required, JD preferred.
 Understanding of and a minimum of 2 - 3 years of experience with
multi-faceted campaigns that integrate strategies around community
organizing and strategic communications.
 Experience organizing communities around social justice issues.
 Eagerness and demonstrated success working in coalitions to attract
support for issue.
 Exceptional interpersonal skills and strategic communication skills.
 Experience using Internet as an organizing tool or the ability and
aptitude to learn.
 Experience working with communities of color preferred.
 Proficiency speaking and writing Spanish preferred.
 Familiarity with technology and privacy issues.
 Willingness to travel often.

The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits
package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU
