Job Description:
The Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief of the American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) invites applications for a full-time litigation Staff
Attorney to work as part of the ACLUs National Legal Department in its
Washington, DC office.
OVERVIEW
The American Civil Liberties Union is a national public interest
organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights. The ACLU
established the Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief in 2005. The
Program is designed to help safeguard American constitutional principles by
ensuring that governmental laws and practices neither promote religion nor
interfere with its free exercise. The Programs goal is to preserve both
religious freedom and the right of individual conscience through an
integrated strategy of litigation, education, and public advocacy.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Attorney will litigate and coordinate cases in federal and state
courts under the supervision of the Program Director of the ACLU Program on
Freedom of Religion and Belief.
Work in collaboration with other ACLU attorneys and local counsel
throughout the country.
Monitor government activities regarding religion.
Conduct extensive legal and factual research.
Work closely with ACLU affiliates and allies for the advancement of the
Programs goals.
Draft pleadings and briefs; discovery and motion practice; take
depositions.
Conduct witness interviews and work with expert witnesses.
Articulate the views of the ACLU to the media and other audiences on a
range of issues related to religion and government under the American
Constitutional system.
Conduct other aspects of trial and appellate litigation.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS
JD and litigation experience required; three or more years of experience
preferred.
Must be a member in good standing of a state bar.
Ability to engage in complex legal analysis and fact-finding; excellent
organizational skills.
Clear and effective written and oral communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to civil liberties and public interest law.
Must possess the ability to work collegially within the ACLU and with
other
organizations.
Familiarity and experience with Free Exercise and Establishment Clause
issues is preferred.
Must be willing to travel.
COMPENSATION
The ACLU offers a generous and comprehensive compensation and benefits
package, commensurate with experience and within parameters of the ACLU
compensation scale.
