About The Fishing
School:
Founded in 1990 by former DC police officer Tom Lewis, The Fishing
School
(TFS) is an after-school family and child support center that provides
a
safe haven, caring adults, and education support to 150 at-risk children
and
youth, ages 6-17 annually. TFS is inspired by the adage, If you give a man
a fish, you will feed him for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and he will feed
himself for a lifetime.
The
families predominately from Wards 6 and 7 in
program is to help
these children excel academically, build character and
self-esteem as they
develop into independent, productive, and contributing
members of
society.
TFS offers the
following programs:
Comprehensive after-school
services:
 Tutoring
 Math and reading
instruction
 Homework assistance
 Recreation and
cultural activities

include:
 Summer Enrichment Program
 Female Youth
Enrichment Program
General
Responsibilities:
Responsible for overseeing the
delivery of a broad range of core programs at
the Wylie Street Center, to
include: Academic enrichment, classroom
instruction, tutoring, homework
assistance, fitness and recreation,
character and leadership development, and
health and life skills. The Site
Director is responsible for developing
partnerships with parents, teachers,
and the
community as a whole, keeping within the mission of The Fishing
School.
Responsible for assisting the Executive Director with meeting
reporting
requirements related to specific programs funded by The Trust.
Major responsibilities:
*Plans, organizes, directs, and
manages the overall site program. Assures
the site is compliant with the
policies of the organization. Aids in
the development of annual program
objectives and prepares monthly calendars.
*Develop plans and systems to
regularly assess student performance and
evaluate program
activity.
*Compiles monthly statistical reports reflecting all activities,
attendance,
and member participation.
*Represents
the organization and interprets its objectives, standards, and
programs.
Promotes and stimulates registration of families. Motivates and
teaches other
staff members to develop participants at the site to
strengthen the community
by engaging in meaningful community service
projects, acting responsibly and
respecting the rights and property of
others.
*Act as liaison to families,
school staff and administrators. Supervise and
ensure the safety of the
members and staff at all times in accordance with
approved policies and
procedures. Manage administrative and operational
processes, overseeing the
maintenance of the equipment and the site.
Qualifications:
Bachelors
Degree in Education or related field
Creative, highly motivated
hands-on-administrator with excellent
organizational skills
Strong
background in youth development and education (math and/or reading
focus
preferred)
Desire to work on issues related to underserved communities
Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Experience or familiarity with classroom instruction needed
Experience with
student assessment and program evaluation required.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability
to train, supervise, and motivate staff.
