About The Fishing
School:
Founded in 1990 by former DC police officer Tom Lewis, The Fishing
School
(TFS) is an after-school family and child support center that provides
a
safe haven, caring adults, and education support to 150 at-risk children
and
youth, ages 6-17 annually. TFS is inspired by the adage, If you give a man
a fish, you will feed him for a day.
Teach him how to fish, and he will feed
himself for a lifetime.
The
families predominately from Wards 6 and 7 in
program is to help
these children excel academically, build character and
self-esteem as they
develop into independent, productive, and contributing
members of
society.
TFS offers the
following programs:
Comprehensive after-school
services:
 Tutoring
 Math and reading
instruction
 Homework assistance
 Recreation and
cultural activities
Additional programs
include:
 Summer Enrichment Program
 Female Youth
Enrichment Program
Responsibilities:
Plan for,
recruit, hire, and manage program staff and volunteers
Manage program
o
Develop and modify, as needed, age-appropriate reading, math, and
enrichment
curriculum
o Maintain individual participation records and provide reports as
required
to the Executive Director, Board of Directors, state, and
parents
o Develop an annual budget and operating plan to support the program;
ensure
that all programs operate within the approved budget
o Provide
documentation as outlined in funding agreements with contributors
o Build new
relationships and strengthen existing relationships with feeder
schools,
parents/guardians, and public and private organizations.
Coordinate
participation to enrich program activities
Monitor program success and
integrity
o Develop goals, strategies, and objectives in accordance with TFS
mission
o Ensure program compliance with federal, state, and local laws
&
regulations and TFS policies
o Develop a program evaluation
framework to assess the strengths of each
program and to identify areas for
improvement; monitor the program
activities on a regular basis
o Report
evaluation findings to the Executive Director and recommend changes
to
enhance the program as appropriate
o Implement pre-and-post program testing
with participants on reading, math
and oral skills.
o Grow TFS programs
through monitoring needs of participants, parents and
guardians, and
participating schools
Qualifications:
Bachelors
Degree in Education or related field
Minimum of three years in leadership
and management in the field of
education
Creative, highly motivated
hands-on-administrator with excellent
organizational skills
Strong
background in youth development and education (math and/or reading
focus
preferred)
Desire to work on issues related to underserved communities
Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook)
Ability to work full-time schedule based on needs of program: M F,
(qualified part-time candidates
will also be considered)
